| Sugar Loaf Proms 2008
Saturday 5th July, Sugar Loaf Field, Woods Corner,
Dallington
Once again, a huge crowd came to Dallington for an evening of
music and fireworks.
The weather forecast was grim - wind
and rain. But, despite losing a number of tents to the gusty breezes
during the morning, the evening turned out to be sunny and
warm.
And the music was superb!

Sugarloaf Proms 2006
– A Roaring Success!

What a night
we had! Dallington rocked & rolled
and lit up
the sky on July 8th when the village staged a fantastic
evening of music and
fireworks on the Sugarloaf playing field.
Around 250
people brought their own picnics and chairs to enjoy a wide variety
of musical
talent. The evening
kicked-off wit h
the ‘Cornflower
Blue Folk Trio’ playing just the right music
for a late summer afternoon in rural Sussex, followed by Katy
Aults (a classical singer)
who delighted us with her range and delivery of classical
favourites.
After Katy, the ‘Grassroots Bluegrass Band’ got
toes tapping and knees bobbing with favourite
bluegrass numbers, and then
the rock groups took the stage.
As twilight engulfed
the field ‘Loudaphone’ indie/rock
band delivered a great set that brought grins
of appreciation to the audience and got people up and dancing.
Then ‘Fall to Fiction’ rock
band took the field by storm to the delight of young and old with
their
fantastic covers
of rock music classics and contemporary songs.
The evening concluded with rousing renditions of
Land of Hope and Glory and the 1812 Overture together with
a magnificent synchronised
firework display amid the cheers and applause from
a happy audience.
After deducting
expenses, the event raised £1,400
to help maintain our beautiful Old School
village hall.
Special thanks
must go to Sue Simms and Keith Harris for the hard work in organising
the event and providing
the fireworks; to the
acts for their wonderful music and song; to Peter Robotham who mowed the grass and provided the hay bales
for seating; and for all the other
willing helpers and organisations who prepared
the playing field and parking area, cleaned
the pavilion, erected and dismantled the marquee,
cleared the field the morning after, and
who helped make the day such a success.
Same time, same
place, next year? Under pressure from the many delighted punters
and acts, the organisers have tentatively
agreed to repeat
the event, if
not on an annual basis
then
at least every other
year. Let’s persuade Sue Simms
to do it all again!
We did! :-)
